I was born in Castelnuovo Val di Cecina (Pisa) in 1962. I graduated in Medicine and Surgery at Pisa and attained a Master in Public Health. In 1997 I became Vice Director of Health at the University Hospital of Pisa where I coordinated donations and transplants until 2000. In 2000 I was elected to the Regional Board of Tuscany and I became President of the Health Commission. From 2005 to 2010 I was Vice President of the Regional Council. My various roles included security and legal policies, technological innovation, the reorganisation and simplification of public offices and equal opportunities. As the last regional president of the Margherita, I contributed to the growth of the Democratic Party in Tuscany. In 2010 I returned to my work at the University Hospital of Pisa as Vice Director of Health. At the same time I returned to my social work with ACLI (Christian Association) and political work as the head of law and security for the Tuscan Democratic Party.

Since September 2011 I have been Emergency Manager for the Asl 10 of Florence and in September 2012 I became Director of Health at the Central Hospital of Florence (Santa Maria Nuova and Palagi hospitals). In the elections of the 24th and 25th February 2013, I was elected a member of parliament for the Democratic Party. I am member of the Social Affairs Commission for the Chamber and of the Bicameral Commission for Simplification.

The 13th November 2013 I was elected president of Cesvot Toscana. Cesvot – the Centre for Voluntary Services in Tuscany – has been operating since 1997 and is managed by 31 regional voluntary associations. It offers education and advice services, helps with planning and researches, documents, promotes and provides information for the benefit of the more than 3,000 voluntary associations in Tuscany.
