Prof. Michael Batty (PhD, Wales) is Chairman of the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA). He has worked on IT models of cities and their visualisation since 1970 and has published several books, such as “Cities and Complexity” (MIT Press, 2005), which won the Regional Science Association’s Premio Alonso in 2011, and more recently “The New Science of Cities” (MIT Press, 2013).
His blog www.complexcity.info deals with science based on the technology of cities, while more of his posts and conferences on Big Data and Smart Cities are available on www.spatialcomplexity.info.
His research group is working on the simulation of long-term structural changes and the dynamics of cities, and he has recently investigated the resilience of networks and populations in relation to climate changes. He is a fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society and became a CBE on the Queen’s birthday in 2004.
