The Scuola Normale Superiore is an institute for university studies and research. Founded in 1810, following the model of French “grandes écoles”, it has passed its educational and formative structure on to other higher education institutions that were subsequently created. Students are selected on merit alone, lessons take the form of seminars, education is profoundly linked with research and university life is promoted by many international exchanges.
